"I wanted the best for my home, so I chose a Superior Walls Foundation."
You have kids. You have pets. You have a husband that has grown-up toys and you need space for yourself. Do you really need any more reasons to start your new home with a Superior Walls Foundation System? Because a Superior Walls Foundation keeps the lower level of your home warm and dry 365 days a year, you get the best of everything your home has to offer and you get to use every square inch for just about anything.
Raymond Houck, Builder
"I've been in business for 37 years and Superior Walls is the best foundation—by far."
In 37 years, Ray Houck has done a lot of building. And by his own admission, he has used poured and block foundations. That, however was before he discovered Superior Walls. Ray uses a lot of superlatives when describing Superior Walls foundations, like cleanest and driest, most square and plumb, but he sums it up with one word that really says it all—"best."
He says the basements are 15 to 20 degrees warmer than with a traditional basement and best of all, they don't leak. Ray won't go back to using anything else for the high quality homes he builds. And when you think about it, who could blame him?
Jack Wotell, P.E. President Baldwin Building Consultants, Inc.
"A wet basement is worthless."
Jack Wotell has strong opinions about auality construction. With 16 years experience in engineering and construction, Jack is familiar with many of the concerns of contractors and property owners—especially when it comes to foundations. "I've seen a lot of cracked masonry work, says Wotell, and I've had my fill of it. It's unsightly and expensive to repair." So when it came time to build his own home in 1995, Wotell looked for a better solution. "I researched Superior Walls and read the literature, and decided to use them." The true test came the following year when a sudden snow melt caused flooding around much of the area—with the exception of Wotell's Superior Walls basement, which was completely dry.
Now Jack Wotell recommends Superior Walls when possible because with "5000 psi precast concrete the wall is not going to fail. It's the best residential foundation wall system available from an engineering and an economical standpoint."
Jack received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and his master's degree in structural engineering from The Johns Hopkins University. After 7 years in consulting engineering, he spent 13 years with Hayes Construction in Maryland as a Project Manager. He started Baldwin Building Consultants, Inc., a structural engineering consulting firm, in 2002.
Berny Hintz, AIA
"I have never had a hint of a moisture problem with a Superior Walls Foundation."
Look out the window of architect Berny Hintz's Maryland office and you'll see a huge farm pond filled with waterfowl. The view is reminiscent of a Currier and Ives print, but just off to the right lies Berny's own home, which he designed, a mix of traditional and contemporary elements that blends with the surrounding Americana. "I wanted to do something cutting edge with custom modular design", Berny says. After studying the engineering, he decided on a Superior Walls foundation. "Because there is a thermal and moisture barrier built right in, the walls solve many typical foundation problems in and of themselves," states the architect. Berny now uses his own home as a "model" when proposing Superior Walls to his clients. Unlike a commercial project, the homeowner is emotionally attached to the house. "The hardest part is education," says Berny, "once they see it, touch it and feel it, they understand the economic and performance value of a Superior Walls Foundation."
Berny Hintz holds a Master of Architecture degree from Tulane University. He has been working on high end residential, commercial and religious structures throughout the country for twenty years. He is a member of AIA and NCARB.
Dwayne Jones Jones Pump Service
"I've never seen one of these walls crack."
When you talk about site preparation, you'd better talk to Dwayne Jones of Jones Pump Service. Dwanye has been in the excavating business longer than most. He knows a quality foundation we he sees it. "I was skeptical at first," says Jones, "but now I think they are the greatest thing going. It installs faster because it does not require a footer plus, the soil gets less contaminated with the stone base than with traditional footers. Engineers say no problem, the county says no problem and unlike a poured foundation, you can back fill right after the floor is poured." Jones says he's never heard of an inspection problem with a Superior Wall Foundation.
Dwayne Jones has been in business for 23 years. He has been excavating home sites for Superior Walls foundations for 13 of those years. He operates his business in Maryland where he offers a wide range of services. Visit www.jonespumpservice for more information.
Victor Montes Lucarelli, Montes, Wells, LLC Principal/Architect
"I've saved time and about 15% on the cost."
In the Washington, DC market, much like the beltway that surrounds it, everything is fast paced. And it is the speed factor that drew prominent DC architect Victor Montes to Superior Walls. By training and nature, architects are skeptical about the lack of a footer and Superior Walls' stone base, but Montes, more adept at structural systems than most concedes, "It makes sense to me because of the way the load is distributed. Although site preparation is a little more intense, it is less expensive in the long run." Montes was first made aware of the Superior Walls system through a builder friend who had used the walls, but it was the "speed at which the foundation was set," along with considerable cost advantages that sold Montes on using Superior Walls on an upscale spec home in a desirable Washington suburb.
Victor Montes attended City College of New York, received his undergraduate degree in architecture from Texas A&M and his masters degree in urban planning from the University of Virginia. He has been a licensed architect since 1985. He is presently a principal partner in Washington DC area firm of Lucarelli, Montes, Wells, LLC
